The real cause of the cartoon controversy
These last days it has become more clear to me why the cartoon controversy happened. I recently saw an interview with a dane ( I can't remember who it was, possibly a spokesperson from Jyllandsposten) who basically said that the drawings was not what caused the outrage. That it was simply not realistic to believe that a few drawings could cause such an outrage.
And when I think about it and reading more it does seem logical. For instance it took more than 5 months before there was a reaction to the drawings. The drawings were even printed in the Egyptian newspaper El-Fagr a month after they were printed in Jyllandsposten without causing any outrage.
The real reason behind the controversy was that a group of radical imams from Denmark started touring the middle east spreading lies about Denmark. They were angry that their calls to punish the editor of the Jyllandsposten newspaper and the cartoonists, had not been heard.
They brought with them a 43 page dossier about denmark. In the dossier they presented made up pictures that were never printed in the newspaper, like a picture of a guy looking like a pig (saying it was supposed to illustrate mohammed, when in fact it was from some french pig contest), picture of Mohammed as pedofile etc. They also described denmark as a islamophoic society were Islam was not a recognized religion, buildings mosques was prohibited and so on. All deliberate lies.
And after this tour all the outrage started. Now one of the imams participating in this tour, who also happens to be Norwegian, have been in the newspaper saying they are sorry for the trouble they caused. That it was not intended and that they are now working to calm the angry masses. I think that is a little late to say now. What they have done is backstabbing their own country. It should have legal consequences. One thing is to accept free speech. Another thing is to allow people to spread lies that hurt a whole country and it inhabitants.
